Colón

Colón, founded in 1850, is the second largest city in Panama, on the Caribbean side of the Panama Canal.

Colón is one of the most important ports of the Caribbean Sea; also a commercial center, a free trade zone that was created in 1953, now the world’s second largest duty-free port; the surrounding area is the home of pristine beaches in which to snorkel in Caribbean waters; lowland rainforests to look for and spot tropical birds; admire colonial splendors at Portobelo and San Lorenzo’s  Forts, that are World’s Heritage Sites, and also be fascinated with modern engineering marvels, seeing the operation of Gatun Locks at the Panama Canal.

Arguably one of the most interesting ways to reach this city is using the railroad, that follows the same route of the first interoceanic train of the America’s. It connects Panama City and Colon through a very scenic route along the banks of the Panama Canal.
