Darién

About 325 kms. from Panama City is Darien. The conquest and colonization of Panamanian territory began through this province in 1501. The first municipality in the entire American continent was in the historic town of Santa Maria la Antigua del Darien.

Darien Province is very humid, rainy, and sparsely populated. This factor is crucial in the conservation of fauna and flora, since it is one of the most ecologically diverse regions of our planet.

This forest was declared by UNESCO Biosphere Reserve Site in 1983 and its National Park – World Heritage Site in 1981, is also known as the Darien Gap of Panama and the Amazon. This park is the largest in Panama with an area of 579,000 hectares.

As a specialty of the region, amidst over 300 different bird species, the “Harpy Eagle” soars above them as Panama’s National Bird.
