Herrera
Herrera Province, whose capital is Chitre, is located in the Azuero Peninsula four hours away from Panama City, and was founded in 1915. It has an area of 2,340.7 km2.
This province emphasizes the practice of farming-type economic activities such as a dairy industry, industrial corn production, sugarcane and beef. For exportation: shrimp, watermelon and cantaloupe. Also, a small decanter and pottery industry (focusing on pre-Columbian high quality reproductions–amongst the most expensive in the Republic), leather processing, ceramics, clay products and tile factories.
Herrera offers sites of ecological, touristic and historical interest.
Examples of Spanish colonial architecture in Chitre, include The Cathedral of San Juan Bautista and the Herrera Museum. The Museum of Colonial Religious Art of the Church of Santo Domingo situated in the Town of Parita.
The province is famous for its festivities during Carnival; especially in Chitré, Parita and Ocú.
